rick hummel of the st. louis post-dispatch joined the ryan kelley morning after to discuss some cardinals topics with the team in the midst of an integral three-game series against the pittsburgh pirates:
On rookie Stephen Piscotty’s composure:
“(Mike Matheny) made a good comparison to (Michael) Wacha when he came up (in 2013). They’re very mature about what they have to do and how to get better. Piscotty talks to veteran players about situations. Most rookies maybe don’t understand the whole process as well as he does.”
What do you think his future with the Cardinals is?
“When (Matt) Holliday comes back…then we’ll see. I expect to see (Piscotty) at first base. Because Holliday is going to play left field. And you’re still going to have (Randal Grichuk) and (Jason Heyward).”
On the Chicago Cubs’ hot streak:
“You knew the Cubs were going to be good soon after watching them bring up some of these kids. You weren’t quite sure it was going to be this soon. Their pitching is strong, they have a terrific line-up and they’re starting to play good defense. They’ve got some firepower. They’re going to be around not just this year, but a lot of years.”
On the Mets:
“They have a chance to be big-time players in the playoffs if they get in.”
