St. Louis Post-Dispatch Rams beat writer Jim Thomas joined The Ryan Kelley Morning After on Friday to preview the Rams’ upcoming Week 2 match-up with the Washington Redskins over the weekend.
We typed up some major talking points from the segment. Listen to the whole interview below:
“We’ve seen it before and really, that’s the storyline of this game. (Left guard) Rodger Saffold and other players were talking about it almost immediately after the win over Seattle, the fact that they need the week-to-week consistency to pile up wins. They’ve had only a handful of two-game winning streaks under Jeff Fisher. They’ve never won three in a row. The feeling at Rams Park is they have a more seasoned team.”
Will Todd Gurley play you think?
“I still think it’ll be another week, but he’s definitely almost there. He’s very close to be ready to go.”
If Gurley is the player he was at Georgia, the Rams suddenly have a good offense, huh?
“No doubt about it. Also, it looks like Tre Mason will play too. All of a sudden, Benny Cunningham is your third-string back. That’s pretty good depth in the back field. With the offensive line playing better than I thought they would, they have the potential to be a pretty good offense.”
On the offensive play calling in the first game:
“Part of (the aggressive playcalling) could be (new Rams quarterback Nick Foles). Especially after the Monday night game…It looks like Foles is more willing to take chances downfield, whereas (former Rams QB Sam Bradford) would check it off. Foles will throw it up. Maybe some days it’ll lead to interceptions, but it sure worked out Sunday.”
Has your view on the upcoming season changed based on what you saw last weekend?
“I always thought they had the potential to do this. In the fourth year, with all these picks in the RGIII trade…Everybody on their defense (besides Aaron Donald) has at least two years experience as a starter. Partly in my mind I thought, ‘It’s time. They’re out of excuses.’ The defense played like we expected. There were times when they dominated the game. There’s a lot of pedigree on their defense. They should dominate at times. We’ll see what the weeks to come bring.”
What’s Brian Quick’s status?
“It looks like he’s going to have a tough time getting on the roster again this week. Jeff Fisher does not like with that style of offense, he doesn’t like to play a lot of receivers. I think Chris Givens deserves a chance to be up there.”
