Lackey: I Think I’ll Be OK Pitching for $500K

when the st. louis cardinals traded allen craig and joe kelly to the red sox for john lackey, the redbirds inherited a $500,000 2015 club option for the right-hander’s services.

After the deal, Lackey confirmed he would pitch for the Cardinals next year under that price, but some remained skeptical, especially after his sparkling debut which saw hime allow two runs over seven innings in a 3-2 win over Milwaukee Brewers.

But Lackey, who’s making $15.2 million this season, on Wednesday reassured Cardinals fans he would stick to the contract.

“This game’s been good to me, I’m not hurting for money. I think I’ll be OK for pitching for $500,000 next year,” Lackey told the Edmonds and McKernan Show Wednesday.

Of course, there was a caveat to the deal.

“It had to be a place where I wanted to be,” Lackey said. “This is definitely a place I want to be. I plan on honoring that contract and getting after it next year.”

And if he continues to pitch like his debut, there won’t be many fans still complaining about the trade.

Lackey had much more to say on the Edmonds and McKernan Show Wednesday. You can listen to the whole thing below.
