Rick Hummel Talks Playoff Rotation, Says ‘Not Worried About Their Offense’

Hall-of-Fame baseball writer Rick Hummel joined The Ryan Kelley Morning After on Monday to discuss several topics surrounding the Cardinals as they head into the final week of the regular season with the Pittsburgh Pirates right on their coattails.

We typed up a few excerpts from the interview, which you can listen to in full by clicking below:

On losing Carlos Martinez:

“That’s a big loss for them. They had four starters anyways, but he would’ve been a valuable piece no matter where you used him.”

On the playoff rotation:

“There isn’t much downside and Lance Lynn has shown he’s capable…of pitching one, two, three or four. He’s got championship experience and he threw well the other day as well.”

Trevor Rosenthal has struggled recently. Are you concerned with him?

“A little bit. I think the best thing for him is to…come into the 9th inning tonight and close it. There’s a little bit of concern. He doesn’t usually have back-to-back outings like that.”

On the Cardinals still not clinching the division:

“The Cardinals haven’t exactly collapsed. The Pirates and Cubs (to a less extent) have just continued winning.”

On John Lackey:

“He’s making probably $2 million overall after making $15 million last year. This is probably the last time you’re going to be seeing him because he’s going to get a whole potload of money from another team and I don’t see the Cardinals paying that.”

On the Cardinals offense heading into the playoffs:

“You can see Holliday is almost all the way back. Grichuk is pretty well back. Adams looked very good yesterday. I’m not worried about their offense. Tonight, they should have their line-up.”
