sb nation’s chris cotillo was the first to report the cardinals were in talks to trade left-handed pitching prospect rob kaminsky to the cleveland indians for power-hitting outfielder/first baseman brandon moss.
Cotillo joined The Ryan Kelley Morning After on Thursday to give this thoughts on the trade.
We typed up some of the interview, which you can listen to below.
You like the deal for the Indians?
“I think Kaminsky is a very high-ceiling guy. MLB.com has him as the No. 3 prospect in the Cardinals system at the time of the deal. For a guy in Brandon Moss who’s hitting .217 on the year, has struggled a little bit, there’s some pop there obviously. I think it’s a really good move for the Indians, who really weren’t willing to move Moss until they got offered Kaminsky.”
Do you think this makes sense for the Cardinals?
“Definitely. They have so many young arms. I think it’s a move that fits both teams. It’s definitely a win-now move for the Cardinals. Hopefully for the Cardinals…he’ll be able to return to the form that led to him being an All-Star last year. He’ll add some pop to that line-up.”
Think Moss will bring the average up?
“Definitely. He’s regressed a little bit this year. But he’s a guy who’s drawn a lot of interest because he offers pop, which is hard to come by these days.”
Jim Callis described Moss as a platoon player who can only hit lefties. What do you think?
“Definitely very interesting splits on him. A left-handed hitter who struggles against righties is unusual. He kind of fits in the mold of a Mark Reynolds.”
Will the Cardinals make another move?
“You really never know with the deadline. I think they could be done, but if the right move presents itself in the next couple days, I could see something happening.”
Any other big names you think will be on the move soon?
“it’s going to be a very interesting market over the next couple days. The Padres are going to sell and have a lot of pieces. The Tigers have said they’re willing to reboot. David Price seems to be the biggest name in the trade market right now after Cueto and Hamels were moved.”
