Shelby Miller Credits Justin Masterson For Improved Performance

This is an excerpt from Tim McKernan’s Thursday Tidbits column

Shelby Miller joined us on The Edmonds And McKernan Show yesterday, and he said this recent stretch is the most confident he’s felt on the mound since he’s been in the Major Leagues.

He attributed much of his performance to the sinker he’s been using, and gave Justin Masterson quite a bit of credit for pointing him in the right direction. He said before, he would mess around with a sinker in his bullpen, but he really wouldn’t want to go to it in a game.

Since getting comfortable with it in his starts, Miller has looked like a different pitcher, so much so that I’m not sure there’s anyway that John Lackey or Michael Wacha—no matter what they do over the rest of the regular season—would supplant Miller as the Game 3 starter in the playoffs.

Miller is 2-0 with a 0.45 ERA in three September starts.
