Soriano on Cardinals Radar?

Brendan Marks, Mon, 11 Aug 2014 18:25:00 GMT

with the overall offense continuing to struggle overall, the st. louis cardinals’ bench continue to be under scrutiny. the current bench, assuming jon jay starts in centerfielder, consists of peter bourjos, outfielder shane robinson, catcher tony cruz and infielders mark ellis and daniel descalso.

According to Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, those five guys are batting a combined .199 in 658 plate appearances. They’ve also combined for three home runs, all of which were hit by Bourjos.

It begs the notion: are the Cardinals in the market for another bat to bolster the bench? St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Joe Strauss thinks so.

Absolutely, the bench is bad. (Mozeliak) typically doesn’t sit tight on bad, so I would expect them to do something there, Strauss told the Ryan Kelley Morning After Monday.

He says one name continues to pop up.

Alfonso Soriano is a name I’ve heard a few times, Strauss said. His name may be better than his production right now. But at least he’s somebody who has the vestige of power, a little bit of versatility. I think that’s a name we hear about a little bit going forward.

Strauss was quick to point he hasn’t heard any imminent deals regarding another bat.

Still, it’s hard to imagine anyone the Cardinals pick up wouldn’t be an upgrade for the struggling bench.
